Dubai: Social media users in the UAE have been circulating rumours about the legality of hemp seed oil.
Hemp seed oil can also be found in serums, lip balms and facial oils.
The municipality explained that hemp seed oil does not contain narcotic properties, and its oil is extracted in the same manner used in olives and coconuts.
Hemp seed oil is often referred to as “hemp oil,” and is harvested by cold-pressing hemp seeds. Hemp oil is often unrefined, and is a clear green oil with a nutty flavour.
In response to the queries, Dubai Municipality has confirmed that the sale and purchase of hemp seed oil is legal, which may be found in some cosmetics and health care products.
Yes, you read that right – CBD beauty products are now officially legal in the UAE. Cue a major (and long overdue) happy dance. Praised for its skin-soothing properties and anti-inflammatory effects, cannabidiol – a.k.a. CBD – has been the talk of the beauty industry for the past few years, with the likes of Alessandra Ambrosio, Olivia Wilde, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow (obv), and the entire Kardashian-Jenner clan swearing by its beauty-boosting powers.
Up until now, CBD-packed products were banned and could not be bought, sold, or used anywhere in the UAE. But thanks to one Emirati, it’s not only now legal, but you can buy it without having to leave Dubai. Jassim Al Nowais made it his mission to educate the powers that be by explaining that although CBD is a chemical compound found in the marijuana plant, it doesn’t contain THC, so it can’t cause any psychoactive changes. In a nutshell, it can’t get you high. But it can get you great skin.
“I saw it as more of an educational role with the law and authorities. I just needed to deliver the right message”, Al Nowais tells Savoir Flair. “At the end of the day, laws are in place to best serve the people, and I believed allowing CBD skincare products was a better way to serve people’s health”. And thanks to Glow Destination – the region’s first online platform dedicated to all things CBD beauty – it couldn’t be easier.
“We launched our platform one month ago, and prior to that, it took us approximately six months to obtain our approvals. We had to prove our case on why CBD is harmless in terms of not being a hallucinogenic drug, and how it differs from THC,” Al Nowais explains. “We showcased the different benefits CBD can provide, and local authorities then took our products to test them in their own labs before deeming them safe. After that was done, we basically had our approval!”.
“The impact that CBD has had on my life is huge; it was a game-changer for me. Before I discovered CBD, I was using countless useless eczema medications and spent so much time searching for alternatives. I stumbled upon some of the best and coolest brands that changed my entire skincare game with no heavy, oil-based creams that are ineffective and useless, or cortisone-based creams that make eczema even worse when you stop using them. Everyone can benefit from using CBD skincare, whether you have skin sensitivity, allergies, eczema, psoriasis, or acne. It takes your skincare game to another level”.
CBD cartridges are not legal to buy in Dubai. As of April 2019, shops in the UAE are allowed to sell vaping devices and e-cigarettes. The devices carry the same age limit (18) as cigarettes. However, vape cartridges or refills containing CBD remain illegal.
However, even though CBD hemp oil contains little-to-no THC, the presence of the letters C-B-D might be enough to bring legal proceedings, and the risk of that far outweighs the benefits.
If you’re caught with even trace amounts of controlled substances (as low as 0.05 grams) you can face up to four years in prison. Trafficking large quantities of drugs in the UAE can lead to the death penalty.
