A. CBD stands for cannabidiol, a compound found in Cannabis sativa. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not make people high. There are some hints that it may be useful for pain relief, so we are pleased to learn it is helping your arthritis pain.
Q. CBD oil is the most effective remedy for my arthritis. I took meloxicam for years, but the side effects made me look for alternative relief.
CBD oil from hemp is fantastic for arthritis pain. It’s good for a number of other things, too.
What Is CBD Oil?
It’s unfortunate that so little research has been done on the effects of cannabidiol for treating arthritis in humans. We found a few studies on rats and mice. There is also a recent double-blind placebo-controlled trial in dogs (Pain, April 24, 2020).
What do you do for your arthritis pain? Some people get by with pain relievers like ibuprofen or naproxen. Others embrace home remedies. The wide range of possibilities, from foods like tart cherries or raisins soaked in gin to acupuncture or supplements such as ashwagandha or MSM, suggests that no one approach works for everybody. One reader is enthusiastic about CBD oil.
The investigators found that low-dose cannabidiol was no better than placebo, but high-dose cannabidiol was helpful. The authors suggest that CBD might be helpful in treating pain and improving quality of life for humans as well as dogs with osteoarthritis. Other scientists have also bemoaned the lack of clinical trials of CBD for joint pain (Cureus, March 23, 2020).
A. Fortunately, CBD (cannabidiol) is not illicit. Even though it can be derived from Cannabis (hemp or marijuana) plants, it does not make people high.
Q. I have had a lot of trouble sleeping, especially since I started menopause. I know someone whose temperament (anxious-tending) and age (50s) are similar to mine. He’s male and I’m female, so I’ve got all kinds of extra-fun hot-flashy kinds of things to make nighttime interesting now.
Anyway, his go-to sleep remedy is a time-release melatonin capsule coupled with a dropper of CBD oil. I have never done one remotely illicit drug in my life, and my family thinks it is hilarious that I am considering CBD oil. All the same, my friend claims to be sleeping easily nine hours a night. That sounds like an absolute dream to me, given that at least half the time I wake up in the middle of the night and have terrible trouble getting back to sleep. Could CBD oil help with insomnia? What about melatonin?
Could CBD Help You Sleep More Soundly?
There have been few if any randomized controlled trials of this compound for insomnia. However, in a large case series (72 individuals), CBD was associated with reduced anxiety and improved sleep (Permanente Journal, online Jan. 7, 2019). For some people, CBD can lead to digestive upset, fatigue and drowsiness (Current Neuropharmacology, Oct. 2019).
These are unsettling, anxious times. It’s little wonder that many people are having trouble sleeping. As a result, they are eager to try even a nonstandard treatment if they believe that would help. Would CBD help you sleep? One reader is wondering.
Melatonin can be helpful for restoring sleep disrupted during the night (British Journal of Pharmacology, Aug. 2018). Did you know that all mammals have an Endocannabinoid System designed to be nourished from cannabinoids?
It was only recently discovered in the ‘90s! Humans naturally produce the cannabinoids (known as Anandamide and 2-Arachidonoylglycerol) and have many receptor sites all over the body for cannabinoids, including in the central nervous system, digestive system, endocrine system and respiratory system. The endocannabinoid system could be called the body’s “Master System.” This system helps act as a regulator for various body functions in both pets and people, and many functions of the body can be improved when people start nourishing their endocannabinoid system by adding cannabinoids to the diet. Non-cannabis plants that contain cannabinoids include: Chocolate– Theobroma cacao, Black pepper– Piper nigrum, Coneflower– Echinacea and others.
Does the quality of CBD Oil matter?
Hemp seeds are highly digestible with 35% protein, with a near perfect 3 to 1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids. Hemp oil can penetrate all seven layers of the skin and has been shown to be beneficial for those suffering from psoriasis and eczema . The hemp plant itself can be used as food, animal feed, fuel, fiber, paper, plastics and even as a building materials in the form of hemp insulation, hemp fiberboard and hempcrete. Hemp is four times more absorbent than wood, making it an excellent material for animal bedding, cat litter and for absorbing toxic oil or chemical spills.
