He said that he believes that cannabis should be fully legalised, taxed, and that people should be allowed to grow their own cannabis for their own use.
“There is a taboo around cannabis oil, but for us it has brought a whole new demographic into the shop.”
While he said that cannabis oil can be used for a “range of neurological and physical benefits”, he cautioned that “CBD oil is not a magic bullet or panacea.
The first health food store in Limerick to stock cannabis oil products says sales have “skyrocketed” in recent months following calls for psychoactive cannabis products to be legalised for medicinal purposes.
He was speaking ahead of a meeting of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health on Wednesday to examine the Cannabis for Medicinal Use Regulation Bill 2016 and possible legal barriers to its enactment.

“The sales have been astronomical,” said Mr Cleere, who is also a biochemist and nutritional therapist.
To be sold legally, the products have to be free of THC – tetrahydrocannabinol – the psychoactive compound found in illegal cannabis herb and resin.

Limerick-based GP Raymond O’Connor, a senior research fellow in the department of general practice Graduate Entry Medical School at UL, says there’s anecdotal evidence that CBD helps with spasticity in MS, nausea caused by chemotherapy, and in severe epilepsy.

Most of the people he knows, who have gone on CBD oil, are still taking it a month later. “They say it reduced their pain level and increased their mobility after being on it a few weeks. It also had a knock-on effect on their mental health, family relationships, and friendships. They were engaging more positively with the world.”
He sees a good benefit in its anti-inflammatory effect and in the fact there are no reports of it harming health. In this way, it’s perhaps superior to ibuprofen, which can cause digestive problems. “If it presents an alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, it’s worth investigating.”
