Self-experimentation generally isn’t recommended when it comes to drugs, but CBD’s benign nature invites it.

Surely, waking up with a racing heart and temples slick with lavender-scented sweat counts as forced interaction. But I had to accept that my hunch about CBD oil and nightmares would have to remain just that. The data to support it just doesn’t exist.

Alertness is not what you want from a sleep aid. But that’s not to say that CBD products can’t help you sleep. When they do, it could be the CBD-adjacent compounds in those products, not the CBD, that is helping you nod off.

To me, CBD was a new drug as well as an OTC sleep aid, so it made sense that it might trigger vivid nightmares. CBD isolate is a compound that’s further purified from CBD extract, which is what’s often sold in shops and added to foods, says Russo.

Sometimes labeled “full-spectrum CBD,” extracts can contain several other compounds derived from hemp in addition to CBD. Sometimes it has a bit of THC, but not enough to get you high, at no more than 0.3 percent.

First of all, you should set your bedroom environment, get a comfortable mattress, make it dark and cool to prepare yourself for dreaming. Then you should get a journal or mobile app where you will write down everything that you remember from your dreams, including sight, feelings, and other important aspects.

Experiment 2: moderate dose

So, now comes the question: what effect does CBD have on the dreams of someone who is a skilled lucid dreamer? We tried to answer this with our experiment below.

On the first night I took 5 drops of oil, which came out to about 12mg of CBD. At this dosage, I didn’t notice any significant changes in my ability to control my dreams. I felt that my dreams were more a recorded movie that I was being forced to watch, like a movie comprised of incoherent scenes put in an incorrect order that didn’t have a flow or make sense, kind of like the scenes in the movie “Memento.”

Perhaps a better way to explain this is that in my dream I felt like a marionette being moved not of my own will, and at spontaneous moments I was able to make my own movements, and only briefly. Simply put, I could control a small fraction of what I was doing.
